The scenic Beartooth Highway (US HWY 212) is the highest road in both Wyoming and Montana and reaches an altitude of 10,947 ft. This National Scenic Byway was completed in 1936 and provides access to Yellowstone National Park from the town of Red Lodge, Montana. The road is open from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October but it's always best to check the local conditions beforehand (see the link below). This nearly 70 mile stretch of road begins in the lush forests near the town of Red Lodge and climbs steadily through dozens of switchbacks to the wind swept tundra high in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Upon reaching the summit there are a myriad of crystal clear lakes to explore, stunning mountain vistas and hundreds of miles of hiking trails to explore. The area is home to both black and grizzly bears, elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Plan on spending an extra day or two here to explore all that this area has to offer. Click here for Beartooth Highway road conditions.
The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (US HWY 296) provides another very scenic route to Yellowstone's northeast entrance from Cody, Wyoming. The highway is named after Chief Joseph, the leader of the Nez Perce tribe who led his people on a journey of 1,170 miles as they fled the U.S. Army following the Battle of the Big Hole in 1877. The highway traverses Dead Indian Pass at just over 8,000 ft. which provides stunning views of the surrounding national forests. There are opportunities to fish along the beautiful Clarks Fork Yellowstone River and plenty of hiking trails into the remote backcountry of the Shoshone National Forest. This is a very quiet stretch of road that eventually connects with the Chief Joseph Highway and there are no amenities. You'll find a handful of well-developed campgrounds but you should be prepared to carry the essentials if you plan to stay for any length of time. This is another special place to explore on the way to your adventures in Yellowstone National Park.
